Container Logistics as a Growth Market
The Seaports of Niedersachsen provide high-capacity transshipment facilities for containers for short sea and deep sea shipping. Moreover, all container-relevant services such as reefer stations, container depots, M+R services, stuffing and stripping as well as document processing are provided. The organisation of door-to-door transportation completes the range of services.
In the deep water container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, the only one in Germany independent of the tides, container vessels of the latest generation can be handled. As a common user terminal it will be available for the use of all shipping companies worldwide. The 1,725 metre-long “Stromkaje” (tidal quay) with up to 16 gantry cranes has space for four giant container vessels and feeder vessels at the same time at one terminal.
The short shipping channel of only 23 nautical miles results in a decisive time advantage for shipping companies.
The deep water container terminal Wilhelmshaven is designed as a transshipment port for feeder shipping to Scandinavia, the Baltic States and Russia. All other European markets will also be served via this terminal. Due to its strategic location it will develop to a hub for the Rhine/Ruhr area providing an alternative to the North Range ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Le Havre. The annual transshipment capacity is approximately 2.7 million TEU.
