Port of Leer

The seaport and inland waterway port of Leer is one of the most important municipal ports of Niedersachsen. It has access to the Ruhr district and to the Benelux countries via the Dortmund-Ems Canal and to the North Sea via the shipping navigation channel Ems. Leer has access to the international motorway and major road network via the Autobahn A28 and A31 as well as the link via the A31 to the A7. Leer railway station – major junction for traffic heading east to west and north to south – is on the intercity network of the Deutsche Bahn AG providing Leer direct access to the economic centres in the north and south of Germany as well as the Netherlands.

The port and railway facilities form the basis of livelihood for more than 20 port-related companies. Leer has about 20 shipping companies, thus ranking as the second largest shipowner location in Germany.

Moreover, there are numerous port-dependent firms established in Leer who are served through the port. The main transshipment goods are building materials and agricultural products. The tide-free port Leer can be reached from the Ems by means of a sea lock (192m in length, 26m in width and 7m in depth).
