PRESS RELEASE

Emden outer harbor at the center of interest

Representatives from Lower Saxony's Ministries of Economic Affairs, Transport, Building and Digitalization (MW) and Environment, Energy and Climate Protection (MU) joined representatives from Emder Hafenförderungsgesellschaft e. V. (EHFG) in Emden's outer port to get an impression of the planned large ship berth (GSLP). With the construction of the new quay between Emskai and Emspier, the state-owned port infrastructure company Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG (NPorts) will begin next year. The berth is scheduled for completion in 2027. The project is being financed with 70 million euros from the budget of the Ministry of the Environment. According to EHFG, the construction of the GSLP is an important step towards counteracting the effects that the implementation of the Ems Master Plan will have on the port of Emden. This is because the planned tidal low water control will result in a 40-centimeter drop in the water level in the outer harbour. In order to be able to continue handling cargo in the outer port, compensation is absolutely necessary, explains Emden's port representative Reinhard Hegewald: “The mega-ship berth is an important part of this compensation”. The Master Plan Ems is intended to improve the ecological situation of the Unterems, which is supported by Emden's port industry.
