PRESS RELEASE

WindEnergy Hamburg, the world's largest meeting place for the wind industry, took place from September 24 to 27. Seaports of Niedersachsen presented itself for the first time this year on a 175m² joint stand of the state of Lower Saxony, together with the economic development agencies from Emden and Cuxhaven and Niedersachsens Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour, Transport and Digitalization. The presentation focused on the important role of Niedersachsens seaports in the expansion of offshore wind energy and the development of the hydrogen economy.

Due to their logistical capacities and strategic location, the ports of Niedersachsen are an essential factor for the energy transition in Germany. They offer the necessary infrastructure to successfully meet the challenges of offshore wind power and the emerging hydrogen economy. Due to their location on the North Sea coast, they are the ideal hubs to support wind turbines on the high seas and at the same time enable the distribution of green hydrogen. These topics were the focus of the trade fair activities of Seaports of Niedersachsen and its partners

The networking evening at the joint stand, which was held under the motto “Niedersachsen networks for the energy transition”, was also particularly impressive. Representatives from politics, business and research came together to discuss the expansion of offshore wind energy and the potential of the hydrogen economy. In numerous discussions, it became clear that close cooperation between the wind energy sector and the maritime industry will be crucial to achieving global climate targets. Cooperation across industry boundaries is necessary in order to fully exploit the growth potential of offshore wind power and actively shape the energy transition.

Another highlight of WindEnergy Hamburg 2024 was the panel discussion as part of the WAB e.V. event. Seaports of Niedersachsen took part in the discussion together with industry partners. The central role of the German seaports for the expansion of offshore wind energy was emphasized here. The ports are not only logistical hubs, but also indispensable partners for the implementation of the ambitious expansion targets. In order to meet these requirements, port infrastructures must be further optimized and expanded. Only through strong cooperation between politics, the port industry and the offshore sector can the necessary capacities be created to sustainably meet the growing demand for renewable energies.

The first appearance of all Lower Saxony's wind energy players at the joint stand can be seen as a success and a step in the right direction. This allows all players to use the large platform for their contacts and discussions. Obviously with good results, as was reflected by the company representatives,” said Andreas Bullwinkel, Managing Director of Seaports of Niedersachsen GmbH.

The seaports of Niedersachsen will continue to play a key role in the energy transition in the coming years and will continue to consolidate their position as indispensable players in the offshore wind energy and hydrogen economy.
